UL Standards
(Revisions with effect from April 1 — June 30, 2009)

Standard Title
& Description
Summary of Key Requirement Changes Effective Date
Standard No. UL 498A
Current Taps and Adapters,
1st Edition
These requirements were revised to clarify the intent of the current taps employing one or two sets of line blades and up to six outlets and to document present practice concerning current taps provided with supplementary overcurrent protection.

In addition, the requirements are added to evaluate current taps with more than six outlets, and therefore, it required (1) supplementary overcurrent protection of such a current tap to limit the potential overloading of a branch circuit due to the increased number of available outlets, and (2) requires the device to be mounted to a receptacle by a means in addition to the blades in order to limit possible damage to the branch circuit receptacle contacts caused by an oversized device.

Furthermore, a current tap with two sets of line blades may not be able to be seated properly in a duplex receptacle that has other than a 1.531 inch separation between the slot openings associated with each outlet. Forcing the current tap to mate with the receptacle may damage either the current tap or the receptacle, increasing the risk of electric shock. It is proposed to (1) standardize the blade spacing and center mounting screw location, and (2) require additional markings and installation instructions, for current taps with two sets of blades.

The addition of paragraph 9.13 indicated a device provided with two sets of blades shall not employ an electrical connection between the two sets of line blades associated with each outlet of the duplex receptacle.

Supplementary Circuitry, Sub-section 15.6, adds to the document the requirements presently applied to evaluate current taps employing supplementary circuitry such as transient voltage surge suppression and electromagnetic interference filtering.
