Standards No.   Standard Title & Description   Summary of Key Requirement Changes   Effective Date
UL 778   Motor-Operated Water Pumps, 4th Edition   Pumps shall be suitable and investigated for indoor and outdoor use, and provided with a marking that identifies both indoor and outdoor use.   January 2, 2007
Polymeric and Epoxy materials employed in pumps will need to be investigated according to UL 746C. Manufacturers will need to submit samples for additional testing to meet these requirements.
Pumps that employ electronic controls that increase frequency will need to be tested with the new test equipment required for testing leakage current.
Pumps that employ solenoids or water valves will need to be tested operating continuously without water and operated with its plunger blocked open with water in the test system.
Manufacturers that are utilizing flag-type tags will need to submit samples for additional testing to evaluate resistance to tearing, adhesion, and conditions that render the marking illegible.
Pumps that are marked for submersion that were previously not tested for submersion will need to be tested.
Pumps covered in UL 778 is not for use in marine areas. All literature, manuals, and shipping cartons will need to be reviewed to determine that no references to marine use are depicted or implied.
UL 44   Thermoset-Insulated Wires and Cables, 16th Edition   In all reports replace “-LS (low smoke)” with “ST1 (limited smoke)”.   January 15, 2007
UL 763   Motor-Operated Commercial Food Preparing Machines, 3rd Edition   Define markings and water spray test for products installed outdoors or in a protected location. Products intended to be installed in these locations must be reviewed to determine if the water spray test was previously conducted or be submitted for testing. In addition, the markings of these products must be reviewed for compliance with Par. 60.7.1 and 60.7.2.   January 29, 2007
UL 474   Dehumidifiers, 8th Edition   The enclosures of dehumidifiers will be required to have a minimum flammability level of 94V-2, or pass the 12 mm or 20 mm end-product flame test. The enclosures of dehumidifiers will be required to have a minimum flammability level of 94V-2, or pass the 12 mm or 20 mm end-product flame test.   January 30, 2007
UL 1642   Lithium Batteries   Lithium cells and batteries are now required to have the UL component Recognition Mark in addition to the manufacturer's name and model number. The marking is required on the cell or battery or on the smallest shipping container.   February 1, 2007
UL 1449   Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors, 2nd Edition   This standard does not cover cord connected or direct plug-in TVSSs intended for use with medical equipment. TVSSs intended for such use shall comply with the requirements of the Standard for Safety of Medical Electrical Equipment, Part 1: General Requirements, UL 60601-1, and the Standard for Safety Requirements for Medical Electrical Systems, IEC 60601-1-1.   February 9, 2007
New and revised requirements for TVSS that incorporates a molded-on or assembled-on hospital grade attachment plug or receptacles, which Caution Marking, cord tag and Full phase voltage require a review.
UL 1026   Electric Household Cooking and Food Serving Appliances, 4th Edition   Standard has been revised to add requirements for impact and strength of slow cooker handles, except those made of ceramic material on a removable vessel.   February 11, 2007
The Stability Test is conducted at 15°C for appliances in which liquid is heated to greater than 115°C. The Grounding Continuity Test must be conducted on all grounded products.
The toaster and under-cabinet or wall-mounted toaster marking should be located on a non-removable crumb tray.
UL 514A   Metallic Outlet Boxes, 10th Edition   A box intended to support a fixture or other product must not deflect more that 1/4 inch when supporting the test weight. Therefore, this type of box will need to be reviewed to determine compliance with the new requirements in Clause 12.14.1. New tests will be needed to determine compliance with requirements in Clause 12.14.1. The Applicant should provide information concerning the location of these types of products.   February 16, 2007
UL 1995   Heating and Cooling Equipment, 3rd Edition   New and revised requirements for all cord-connected units of manually-operated controller, Leakage current test, Strain relief, Power supply cord, and Production Line Grounding Continuity Test, need to review and investigate.   February 17, 2007
UL 2108   Low Voltage Lighting Systems, 1st Edition   Electrical spacings for secondary circuits are reduced. Aluminum conductors, including custom current carrying aluminum parts, are permitted in secondary circuits of exposed bare conductor lighting systems without additional temperature test conditions.   February 27, 2007
These new and revised requirements related exposed bare conductor lighting systems, including Markings, installation instructions, and other literature, and Mounting Means Test will require a review or retest to evaluate.
UL 2108   Low Voltage Lighting Systems, 1st Edition   All new and revised requirements are only applicable to presently certified Exposed Bare Conductor Lighting Systems and Power Units for Exposed Bare Conductor products. February 28, 2007
UL 508A   Standard for Safety for Industrial Control Panels, 1st Edition   All new and revised requirements are only applicable to grounding of power supply secondary circuits, slash rated components provided in secondary circuits, color-coding of grounded circuit conductor, terminations for flexible internal conductors, recognized component bus bars, reduced ampacity for internal wiring of power circuits, ampacity of internal wiring of control circuits, branch circuit protection for motor groups, protection of tap conductors in motor groups, overcurrent protection for other (non-motor) loads included in motor groups, revised requirements for industrial control panels marked for use with industrial machinery   March 1, 2007
UL 498   Standard for Safety for Attachment Plugs and Receptacles, 14th Edition   Receptacles not intended for interrupting current shall be marked “CAUTION – Risk Of Electric Shock. Do Not Disconnect Under Load” or an equivalent statement following the word “CAUTION”.This marking shall be on the device where visible while the device is in the mated condition.   March 15, 2007
UL 197   Standard for Commercial Electric Cooking Appliances, 9th Edition   If the motors used in your products are Recognized Components under the categories (XEWR2) or (XEIT2), they will be in compliance with these requirements. If they are covered under (PRGY2) and are provided with overtemperature protection external to the motor, additional review will be needed to determine compliance.   March 26, 2007
UL 283   Air Fresheners and Deodorizers, 1st Edition   The additional Drop Impact Test, Rod Pressure Test, and Crush Resistance Test for Direct Plug-In appliances will require all previously evaluated direct plug-In appliances to be subjected to this new performance test for continued Listing.   March 31, 2007
