The journey to China RoHS has begun¡­

1. What is the full name for China RoHS?

It has been called as China RoHS for China¡¯s Management Methods on Prevention and Control Pollution Caused by Electronic Information Products.

2. How do manufacturers determine if their products are electronic information products?

The Ministry of Information Industry (MII) has been formulated a detailed list and definition of electronic information products. Manufacturers could use this list for checking and verifying if their products are electronic information products.

3. How are the product scopes covered by China RoHS¡¯ and European Union (EU)'s RoHS differ?

The EU RoHS Directive covers all the electrical and electronic equipment with voltage less than 1500Vdc or 1000Vac. The China RoHS covers only electronic information products to be imported, sold and used in China Market (excluding military products and those products exported outside of China ).

4. What is the timeline for the implementation of Administrative Measure for China RoHS?

The Administrative Measure for China RoHS was promulgated on February 28, 2006. The effective date for the Administrative Measure is March 01, 2007. There is no timetable for the product catalogue on restriction and prohibition of toxic and hazardous substances. China RoHS is a "product catalogue management"scheme. That means MII will formulate a product catalogue. Only products covered by the catalogue needs to apply for China RoHS certificate.

5. Are there any exemptions from China RoHS?

No. China RoHS adopts a Catalogue managed model, The catalogue is formulated by list method (list all regulated products). The EU RoHS Directive includes all eight categories in the WEEE Directive and adopts exemption method to exclude those products whose technique is immature and/or economically impossible.

6. Does China RoHS require manufacturers to comply with any standards?

The standards that manufacturers have to comply with are not available yet. At this stage, eight industry standards for the prevention of pollution are being established.

 7. For marketing my electronic information products, what are the key steps I need to follow throughout the China RoHS compliance process?
